Our Projects for Aquaculture and Agriculture's Tomorrow

Our commitment lies in national and European research projects that address the significant challenges confronting aquaculture and agriculture, both now and in the future. Within aquaculture, our projects target: environmental sustainability and resilience against climate change; innovative AI technologies for the automatic computation of the WFI (Welfare Index); and the improvement of techniques via intelligent Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) and technologies for Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA). Within agriculture, we develop smart DSS systems to sustain optimal cultivation practices, the evaluation of water stress, tolerance to extreme temperatures, and other unfavorable environmental conditions foreseen with climate change.

AVATIM – Virtuous Marine Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA)

M2C1 – I 3.4 NGEU Funds - CUP B65C22026170001

AVATIM pursues the following strategic objectives:

  1. Production Diversification: Achieving vertical integration via Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) to complete the production chain. This involves the husbandry of emerging fish species with high market potential to preserve and expand business operations, thereby increasing employment units and strengthening the socio-economic fabric of the production area;
  2. Production Scaling and Innovation: Focused on the enhancement of traceability protocols and the reinforcement of food safety standards;
  3. Circular Economy Integration: Implementing advanced waste processing and sustainable packaging solutions within a circular economy framework.
  4. Distribution Efficiency: Optimizing distribution logistics and fostering integration with Smart City infrastructures, while monitoring and mitigating carbon and water footprints.
  5. Logistical Rationalization: Integrating the logistics chain to facilitate the creation of a highly specialized fishery and aquaculture hub.

AVATIM was established to address the critical need to complete the Italian seafood supply chain. It achieves this by integrating the production of viable farmable species while precisely addressing market demands for both farmed and wild-caught products through the optimization of the distribution network.

NEFERTITI

PNRR ON FOODS - University of Napoli Federico II°, CUP: E63C22002030007

NEFERTITI proposes to explore four vegetal matrices: pigmented cereals, carobs, salicornia, and bergamot separately and combined among themselves to obtain flours rich in polyphenols having antioxidant activities, applicable to produce new sustainable fit food products with functional properties, accessible and eco-friendly. “NEFERTITI” foresaw an innovative online platform to update all the phases and results of the project that will be disseminated by FAIR methodology and training certified.

By adopting innovative processes and introducing new food products tailored to MedDiet, “NEFERTITI” aims to develop dietary patterns and functional products and diversify wheat-based foods that are replicable, scalable, and eco-friendly to achieve safety for consumers and the environment.

FishVision

Agritech - Spoke 5 Research Line C - Sub-theme 2 - CUP J83C22000830005.

“Fishvision” is aimed at validating, under real-world conditions, a management application based on artificial intelligence for the welfare and health of fish species (gilthead seabream, Sparus aurata, and European seabass, Dicentrarchus labrax) in offshore Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) systems, cloud accessible and manageable.

”FishVision” involves the modeling of a recurrent neural network (RNN) to enhance the productivity of marine farms. This type of approach will enable the adaptation of the feeding and management system to climate change, the mitigation of biotic and abiotic stress, the eutrophication and acidification of water columns, and the integrated monitoring of effluents through a precision feeding system that implements a welfare analysis model for farmed fish according to the One Health framework.

SPIGA Sustainable Pigmented Grains as Fitfood for mediterrAnean diet

OnFoods - University of Naples Federico II, CUP: E63C22002030007

SPIGA proposes to explore three pigmented grains, Triticum aestivum (blue) and two Triticum durum (purple and red), to obtain flours rich in polyphenols having antioxidant activities, useful to produce new sustainable cereal based products with functional properties. These grains show the ability to thrive in water-scarce conditions, and withstand some grain pests and weeds, without using glyphosate. SPIGA set up an innovative online platform to update all the phases and results of the project that will be disseminated by FAIR methodology. Consequently, SPIGA presents a smart and feasible approach to integrating pigmented grains as eco-friendly cereals for the benefit of both the environment and human health.

By adopting innovative processes and introducing new food products tailored to the MedDiet, SPIGA aims to develop dietary patterns and functional products and to diversify wheat-based foods. with the potential to prevent and alleviate diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disorders, cancer, intolerances and Alzheimer’s

Competitiveness and Sustainability of Mountain Aquaculture

National Supply Chain Program, CUP: J38H23001450007

Project entails the provision of a structured and georeferenced database pertaining to daily time series of aquaculture batches of Mediterranean fish species (rainbow trout, brown trout, Arctic char, gilthead seabream, European seabass) from 1991 to the present.

The normalized database, subsequent to a data cleaning phase, will enable the training of a bespoke neural network developed by the “Dipartimento Sperimentazione agraria, forestale e ambientale della Fondazione E. Mach”.
